The biggest say they will get is the leadership election. If members want a different policy on Trident they can vote Meacher, McDonnell or whoever. I doubt they will. Surely it's better that Brown runs on a transparent moderate ticket than leftwingers accidently voting for him then finding they've got another moderate leader?

ReplyDeleteGordon Brown came out with a line in favour of nuclear weapons (perhaps yes, perhaps no) that suggested that any debate within the Labour Party or even - horror! - the Commons would be, at best, cursory. The means by which a decision is arrived at are sufficiently important that the ends do not override them.
It is entirely reasonable for people to say that they would like Gordon Brown to move one door along Downing Street but that they have concerns about maintaining 5800kT of nuclear weapons and would like an honest debate that has the potential to decide either way.
