CPZ for Clifden Road?
Fellow Labour Blogger Stuart Bruce http://www.stuartssoapbox.com/2006/06/new_labour_blog.html
has rightly chided me for not using this site to interact with my constituents in Chatham Ward, London Borough of Hackney.
Well here goes - apologies to anyone expecting every one of my posts to be highly controversial and about national Labour Party issues - normal service will resume shortly.
The big issue in the bit of my ward north of the Homerton Hospital (Clifden Road etc) is parking - local residents find it really hard to park outside their own homes because of pressure from cars of hospital patients & staff. I'm introducing a deputation of local residents on this issue at Full Council on 28 June.
If any residents of that patch - or indeed hospital users who park there - would like to say what they think on this issue please post a comment below - are you in favour of a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) where residents would pay an annual fee but non-residents would not be able to park there? or do you disagree with a CPZ? what can the hospital do to help the Council address the problem - e.g. through a green travel plan, park & ride scheme or similar? what is your experience of parking in the area or if a non-resident, travelling to the hospital?

I'm not a constituent but was wondering what is your take on the Tories' chances in London.
I read an article in the New Statesman last year about Eric Ollerenshaw saying Labour would be unwise to dismiss him. As a Hackney councillor what do you make of this?
And how do you think the Tories will do in the London mayoral elections next time round?

We always take Eric seriously - the Tories have a good record of winning seats off Labour in Hackney. However, his strategic judgement seemed to leave him this May as the Tories in Hackney did not perform as well as in other boroughs - we gained a seat back from them - see post in May archive on Hackney results. As for London-wide, much as it pains me to say it having opposed his readmission to the Labour Party, I think Labour can win with Ken as Mayor whereas otherwise we might be looking at a Tory gain. In either case it will be a lot closer than last time.

I'm a Hackney resident with small children and elderly parents. Due to this Homerton Hospital is a regular destination.
Up until now parking at the rear of the hospital has been possible which eases bringing young children and frail elderly.
Should the proposed CPZ go ahead, it would make attending the hospital very difficult for people like me. I do not earn much money so using pay and display is prohibitive. And trying to bring a frail elderly person, or two young children on your own by public transport is very difficult.
I appreciate the concerns of the local residents, and their parking difficulties, but parking restrictions would create far-reaching problems for more than just the locals as everyone including the locals will have to pay for parking.
As I understand it, a consultation was done last year but it wasn't well publicised because the first I knew about it was seeing a consultation reminder strapped to a lamp post on clifden road two days ago (12th November 2007).
Hospitals are full of people of lower economic means, and it is these people, as well as poorer locals, who will have to suffer should these parking restrictions go ahead.
