People Liberation Front of Judea etc...

The Labour left are having one of their periodic Monty Python moments in reaction to Brown's pro-Trident speech. The People's Liberation Front of Judea want Michael Meacher MP to run for leader, whilst their rivals in the Judean Popular Liberation Front want John McDonnell MP: http://www.epolitix.com/EN/News/200606/8d393ef6-0619-4888-b38a-cfd01bfef7c4.htm

Gordon must be so afraid given the popular appeal or lack thereof of both Meacher and McDonnell...

Meanwhile an embarassed silence from the usually verbose comrades at Compass - http://www.compassonline.org.uk/ - as Neal Lawson suddenly realises that he will have even less influence under a Brown administration dominated by traditional Labour rightwing Atlanticists than he has done under Blair.

Dear Luke

Gordon should be worried though about the 96% of Labour Party members who want a say in policy.

Full details of what members and former members actually think can be found at:

The biggest say they will get is the leadership election. If members want a different policy on Trident they can vote Meacher, McDonnell or whoever. I doubt they will. Surely it's better that Brown runs on a transparent moderate ticket than leftwingers accidently voting for him then finding they've got another moderate leader?

1) Neal Lawson will be up for a safe seat under Brown.

2) Meacher is a twat but McDonnell has appeal.

No I'd rather be a Roman as they were responsible for "sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system and public health" to quote the film.

McDonnell has appeal? To whom? The IRA he used to be the parliamentary cheerleader for? This is the guy who denounced Ken Livingstone as a sell-ou ffs.

I just think he has got a bit of personality even if I don't agree with his politics.

I'd rather the SCG ran him rather than Alan Simpson.

Have you ever seen the Islington North CLP website?

I think comrade Tom could be referring to the campaign group website.

yes, I know he was referring to SCG wesbite....but I think the Islington North CLP looks even more "1982" than the Campaign Group one.

To say that the Romans gave the world "sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system and public health" is perhaps to ignore the brutality of slavery that they ran.

Gordon Brown came out with a line in favour of nuclear weapons (perhaps yes, perhaps no) that suggested that any debate within the Labour Party or even - horror! - the Commons would be, at best, cursory. The means by which a decision is arrived at are sufficiently important that the ends do not override them.

It is entirely reasonable for people to say that they would like Gordon Brown to move one door along Downing Street but that they have concerns about maintaining 5800kT of nuclear weapons and would like an honest debate that has the potential to decide either way.
