Bob, Ken, Trevor and race
Today's Daily Mirror reveals that Bob Spink MP has modified none of his less than charming views on race and immigration since I stood against him in Castle Point in the last General Election.
Back then, he ran a series of local newspaper adverts with the headline "'What bit of 'send them back' don't you understand Mr Blair?' " and me & the Lib Dem candidate complained about him to the CRE.
So much for Cameron's new cuddly liberal Tory Party. Same old Tories, same old redneck views.
However, rather than focussing on this kind of disgusting bigotry, anti-racists are busy attacking each other - see Ken Livingstone's bizarre series of attacks on Trevor Phillips.
Ken - hint - on this issue your enemies are Bob Spink and the BNP not Trevor and the CRE.

Slightly off the topic Luke, do you have a hard left in Amicus. If so, what are they like??

Yes - don't know about rest of country but in London a lot of veteran Bennites from the '80s are still active in Amicus (all ex-MSF as far as I can tell rather than ex-AEEU) e.g. Jim Mortimer (Labour General Secretary under Foot), "Red" Ted Knight (Leader of Lambeth council in '80s). I get the impression the ultra left have fallen out with Derek Simpson since he became General Secretary.

Some left wing MPs comes from Amicus too (Lynne Jones, Bob Wareing, Ian Gibson, Linda Riordan and John Austin)

One of Socialist Organiser once told me that they were all in the MSF as it was the only trade union the unemployed could join.

Bob Spink was quoting official govt figures. If those figures showed that most people in prison was white you people would be falling over yourselves to let the world know! Even some black commentators are admitting that there is a problem with black young men getting into serious crime! If that is the case let the public know the truth and let the people in power tell us what they are going to do about it! It is self serving fools like you that would have us believe that it would result in black people being lynched or a BNP prime minister.Ordinary people , black and white are not being served well by timid politicians and pundits

Ahh, the Mortimers, takes me back 10 years. Browning ward (North Southwark and Bermondsey CLP) branch meeting. Ian Corfield proposes something. Jim Mortimer: "while I respect Ian I think he is a right wing shit bag". Pat Mortimer (Jim's wife) "Well I don't respect Ian at all, I think he is an evil right wing shit bag".
Me and Akehurst: "supressed giggles".
Presumably her corns were giving her particilarly bad pain that night.......

It isn't credible to imply that the Labour Mayor of London is not focused on fighting both racists in the Tory party or the BNP. He has a much longer record on this than most.
The truth is that Ken Livingstone is right, and Trevor Phillips wrong, on the issue of multiculturalism, and a greater defence of the benefits of multiculturalism would be timely in the current climate.
Trevor Phillips has allowed the CRE to become an adjunct of the tabloid attack on multiculturalism, fuelling arguments that we are 'sleepwalking to segregation' which just allow the Express et al to 'prove' that they were always right. In fact most academic studies show that Trevor's thesis is wrong.
This point is well made in the Guardian's Comment is Free section:
