The moment when you realise that support for your leadership ambitions may be a little premature and confined to the outer fringes of the the PLP is when you get endorsed by Frank Field. Still it could have been worse, Alan Milburn hasn't declared who he's backing yet.

He is a tad right wing; but in general he is fairly agreeable.

I thought the political kiss of death is Clare Short's endorsement...and even if she's not a Labourite anyway, that won't stop her to say who her favourite candidate is (she even managed to give her endorsement in the Tory race...she wanted Ken Clarke to win...he lost in first ballot, naturally)

Kiss of death? What about Lembit! Didn't he back Kennedy to stay on, then he joined the Oaten campaign before finally endorsing Simon Hughes!!

Yes, Frank Field, famously described by Polly Toynbee as a man with many admirers, most of whom are in the Tory Party.
What more can you say about a guy who gets called a Tory by the SDP?

I agree with Adele. Frank Field represents a lot of mainstream views and having listened to his interview on the World at One, I though his comment was fair. He seemed to suggest that if the Labour Party was to refresh itself and gain a fourth term in office, then those associated with the past may not have the approval of the voters. He admitted that he was not a fan of the Chancellor for leader and being a supporter of David Miliband.
I personally think that Frank Field is right. Somehow, when it comes to the next election, the voters may want a fresh face. Gordon Brown will not provide this.
