Polls

Don't read the new ICM poll. It'll only depress you if you are a Labour supporter.

Instead, take a look at the Australian Labor Party's 20-year record lead in today's Newspoll - 52% on first preferences versus just 34% for the government, rising to a 61%-39% lead on the preferred vote after transfers.

This doesn't just affect the ALP. It affects us here.

Have a think about what it will do for the next Labour PM's ability to construct a way forward in foreign policy and to get action on climate change if the line-up Gordon is dealing with globally includes the substitution of Hilary Clinton and Labor's Kevin Rudd for George W Bush and John Howard.

More here.

This is good news indeed. John Howard has to be the single worst democratically elected world leader since Adolf himself. He has decimated common Australians.

'Following his 1998 election success, Rudd was promoted to the Opposition front bench after the 2001 election, and was appointed Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs. In this position he strongly criticised the Liberal government of John Howard over its support for the United States in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, while maintaining Labor's position of support for the Australian-American alliance. Rudd has grown increasingly sceptical about the U.S.-led intervention in Iraq since the invasion. In a 2004 interview with Channel 7, Rudd said:

Well, what Secretary Powell and the US seems to have said is that he now has grave doubts about the accuracy of the case he put to the United Nations about the claim that Iraq possessed biological weapons laboratories - the so-called mobile trailers. And here in Australia, that formed also part of the government's argument on the war. I think what it does is it adds to the fabric of how the Australian people were misled about the reasons for going to war.'

Awesome stuff. Nice and anti-hezbollah too. Cool.

Howard worse than Thatcher or Reagan or George W? Or Nixon? Or Berlusconi? Or any of the pre-"clean hands" expose Italian PMs? He has some competition.

Presumably the Australian poll shows what a galvanising effect having Neil Lawson speak at your meetings has on your party...
