I need a bit of time to absorb the detail but my impression is that this is a reshuffle that will really unite the Party and consign all the historic TB-GB stuff to the dustbin of history.
Brown has been astonishingly generous to many MPs considered Blairite. For instance he has made Siobhain McDonagh a whip even though she was one of the handful who didn't nominate him for Leader.
Well done to Tom Watson on getting back into the whips' office - I hope this won't see his blog go completely into mothballs.

I'm not surprised that Brown is being so generous: remember his election wasn't about a win of one faction over another - he was the only candidate, with everyone else essentially saying that they'd support him, so of course he is reciprocating with a unity cabinet, with something there for every part of the party (the left have got a slight change in foreign policy).
I'm also feeling very cheerful about how it's gone. It's practically text-book stuff.

Brown is a grown up. Siobhain McDonagh will be a good Whip. Thankfully Brown does not indulge in childish behaviour. That is firmly left to others. Siobhain is clearly just the right person for the job.

Interesting to read the party vice-chairs and manifesto group chairs, in light of the "most right wing ever" claims. Martin Salter as V-C is a fully paid-up member of the awkward squad (and a terrific constituency MP.) Jon Trickett, the mastermind of the Cruddas campaign gets the Housing policy brief, and the Scottish manifesto group even recognises the talents of a Campaign Group member- David Hamilton. Clearly Brown still recognises the "broad church"- and quite right too.

Luke you're in the know in London, so I'm hoping that you're going to confirm that this is all garbage in the Telegraph today. I've just been mailed the link by a real right-winger gloating about the supposed end of New Labour spin!
".....Mr Brown has instructed his MPs to tell voters how "inspiring" and "exciting" they find him and what a "pleasure" it is to work with him.
A slick campaign pack sent out last week instructs Labour MPs and candidates to mail thousands of voters to boast how happy they are with the change of prime minister.
Entitled "Introducing Gordon Brown as Prime Minister to your constituents",
Although it is unlikely that all Labour MPs are on friendly terms with Mr Brown, the letter goes on: "I've known Gordon well for many years and it has been a pleasure working with him down at Westminster”.
"He asked me to get in touch with you to see what you think needs to be done. I hope you will take a few minutes to get in touch so that I can tell our Prime Minister what your priorities are for (insert area)."
And…
"It has been a really exciting and inspiring week. There is no doubt that Gordon has been a brilliant Chancellor, delivering economic stability, more jobs, a fairer deal for pensioners plus extra money for our local schools and hospitals.......cont"

Dave, Martin Salter may be awkward but he is a brilliant campaigner who has turned a typical south of England seat into a Labour stronghold. Good qualification to be a Party VC. I don't mind Trickett developing housing policy, it would be if he was developing defence policy I'd have a problem.

I'm not sure Reading West can be considered as a Labour stronghold.

Very much my point, Luke. Salter is a superb campaigner (once had the headline in his local paper "Is this the best constituency MP in Britain ?" or words to that effect.) Andrea is right to qeustion whether we can call Reading West a stronghold, but I can't see us having any problems there while Martin's personal vote holds up.

Of course local Labour Parties want to promote Gordon Brown: in case you missed it, we've just chosen him as our party leader and would quite like to talk about that. As with all materials, we're not "instructed" to say anything (try "instructing" the average independently-minded GC, and see what happens.) As is quite normal, a number of suggestions for campaign materials has been made, and local Parties will adopt and adapt to their own needs.
All of our campaign materials are slick, and which bit of the last paragraph was it that you actually disagreed with ?

dave, just the whole cynical, lying pretended sincerity is what I "actually disagreed with"; if what you are saying is 'yes this is what we get up to'.
Haven't you yet clocked onto the fact that the (diminishing) electorate has wised and got utterly alienated by this type of behaviour? Hence the hope among many that things would change with Gordon Brown in post... and after all it is clearly a message that he has been personally articulating... or is that part of what you seem to be verifying is the whole cynical, lying pretended sincerity?
That's, for example, my that right-winger mailed me the article with ample gloating.
