Boris

So, Boris Johnson is going to run as Tory candidate for Mayor of London.

I am sure that the Old Etonian MP for leafy Henley will really understand the problems facing Hackney and other inner city boroughs.

And his experience as Brackenbury Scholar in classics at Balliol College, Chief Political commentator on the Daily Telegraph, and Editor of the Spectator makes him an obvious choice for a demanding executive role representing Europe's most diverse city and delivering policing and public transport to 8 million people.

Remind me of Tony Blair's background again?

Am I right in thinking that Boris was a member of the Bullingdon Club? Can you arrange for an ASBO just in case they want a London reunion?

Tony Blair lived in Hackney, next door to the Holly Street Estate.

Besides which the pertinent question here is about the contrast with Ken Livingstone's experience as that is who the Tory toff is running against.

So if Boris moved to Hackney for a couple of years he'd be qualified?

He also has a place in Islington North, I believe.

Don't get me wrong, I detest the bloke, but there are potential double standards here and we should concentrate on his terrible politics rather than where he's MP for.

But his constituency isn't even in London and he is trying to become Mayor of London.

That's a fair point. Is he not going to resign his seat like Ken did then?

Yay! A left-wing loon versus a right-wing loon. This could be a truly great contest. Ken is right about transport, the olympics, anti-fascism, and general socialist rhetoric. He is wrong about getting all loved up with Islamist mentalists. Johnson, however, is wrong about everything. It will be fantastic!

Johnson must be crazy if he thinks that - with no experience of running anything at all - he is a credible candidate.

As Susan Press says on her blog (Grimmerupnorth) Boris comes across as a bit of a loveable toff (so says my missus). This the persona he has propergated on TV (Have I got news for you). The thing is underneath the shabby hair cut and plummy bumbling there is a dyed in the wool tory. This cuddly right wing moron could take Ken to the wall as he is quite simply well loved.
As I have said on a previous post, Ken shared a platform with a bigot so I can't say I am a fan, but I don't want to see a tory in any administative office (Scottish parliment, Welsh assembly, London Mayor) either. I don't live in London so how popular is Ken? The impression I get from the media is that Londoners are negative.

The media is certainly negative. The mood among London is a lot more mixed.

Isn't he in the same Bullingdon photo as either Cameron or Osborne?

The same one as Cameron - you can see him bottom right, in the picture here: http://provisionalbbc.blogspot.com/2007/03/cameron-silence-over-eton-claims.html

I say bring it on. Unless the Tories pick a high-profile candidate who the public knows, thrashing them in the mayoral elections does very little damage to Project Cameron. But to see them humiliated in a real contest (which they would be - people might like Boris but they wouldn't trust him with their money) would be genuinely damaging.

Obviously he will need to fend off Shagger Norris and any other contenders. Perhaps Tony Lit would like a run out?

Have now published a good part of this afternoon's research on Cameron's latest recruits.

These defectives' stepping stone from Labour to Cameron's Conservatives was founded and is still masterminded by an ex-NF Organiser and jailbird (ABH for 4-5 months of a 6 month sentence) for bricking and wounding a police officer from a moving train.

The good thing about a Boris candidacy is that it would enliven interest in the contest - not much of a recommendation but that's how desperate things have got (especially for the Conservatives)

Let me put it this way.Ken got in as much cos he was a maverick and out-of-kilter with the Blairite establishmnent.Boris is a right-wing git but brilliant at doing P G Wodehouse toff routine and out-of-kilter roguesihness from the right..He really will give ken a run for his money...think Margaret Rutherford on two wheels...Miss Marple with blond hair.He could win.
