Commiserations
Commiserations to Tower Hamlets Labour Party and candidate former council leader Prof Michael Keith re. yesterday's Shadwell Ward by-election.
Despite a big swing (6.7%) from Respect to Labour, Respect just held on.
Tower Hamlets Borough - Shadwell:
Respect 1512, Lab 1415, Con 476, Lib Dem 98. (May 2006 - Three seats Respect 1851, 1789, 1707, Lab 1287, 1141, 1054, C 723, 670, 605, Lib Dem 226). Respect hold. Swing 6.7% Respect to Lab.

Interesting to see Labour actually polling more votes in a by-election than in the main local election. Not easy to do. Lib Dem vote badly squeezed there it seems.

More worring might be a sign of anti Labour tactical voting by Tories and LibDems in the face of a strong Labour campaign

David
Yeah, deeply disconcerting, if this wasn't the political equivalent of toe nail clippings.

This was a ward where Michael Keith won 72% of the vote in a by-election when he won in 1994.
What a pile of crap the Labour Party has turned into that it thinks a privatising failed council leader is its best hope of winning what should be a rock solid Labour seat.

I think this is probably more likely to be a case of former Lib Dem and Tory voters voting tactically for Labour rather than against!
