Neal Lawson on Newsnight
Well done to Paxman for puncturing Neal Lawson's balloon last night on Newsnight, introducing Neal as "Neal, err... sorry I've forgotten your surname, from Compass, the think tank not the sandwich maker".
A blog by Luke Akehurst about politics, elections, and the Labour Party - With subtitles for the Hard of Left. Just for the record: all the views expressed here are entirely personal and do not necessarily represent the positions of any organisations I am a member of.

Compass the sandwich maker? Is this a London thing?

They are big school dinner contractors, and not just in London.

Compass are surely better known as a driving school?

Compass are a humungous catering company, the former employer of that business guru Gerry Robinson, later of Granada, who rocked up to the NHS one day and siad it could improve business-wise. How very observant of him. Loads of motorway service stations and works cafeterias and the like.
Lawson wasn't too bad though was he Luke? Strange that he gets smeared for a Paxo mistake.

Whatever is your problem with Compass?
At least they are coming up with some ideas - what concerns me about the current crop of right wingers is their entirely managerial approach. It used to be the Fabian Right of the party where ideas were developed - Tony crosland being a notable example.
But the problem now is that we simply don;t appear to have any vision except 'more of the same - and it all tastes a bit like 'yesterday's leftovers'.
This is the problem with what new labour quite quickly became - totally immune to criticism and far too protective.lets be frank. We won three elections on the trot because of how bloody awful the Tories were. Not because of what we had to say. Now, its us who looks tired - and in recent days, inept too.
More of the same just isn't going to work. Nor is more lurching to the Right. With an electable Tory party, why bother with a pale alternative?
We need less neo-liberalism in economic policy, less neo-con foreign policy, and we need to learn how to be social democrats again.

But he wouldn't know your first or second name Luke, and you've got a much bigger ego!
