Council by-election results

Last night's council by-election results:

Stevenage Bedwell Division, Hertfordshire County Council. Lab hold. Lab 1452 (56.5%, +1.0), Con 625 (24.3%, -0.6%), LD 329 (12.8%, -6.8), UKIP 165 (6.4%, did not stand in 2005). 0.8% swing from Con to Lab.

Pin Green Ward, Stevenage BC. Lab hold. Lab 671 (54.8%, +3.2), Con 303 (24.7%, +1.7%), LD 149 (12.2%, -0.3%), UKIP 61 (5.0%, did not stand in 2007), Green 41 (3.3%, did not stand in 2007). 0.8% swing from Con to Lab.

Redwell West Ward, Wellingborough BC. Con hold. Con 669 (59.2%, -18.3), BNP 177 (15.6%), Lab 169 (14.9%, -7.6), LD 40 (3.5%), UKIP 39 (3.4%) , Green 37 (3.3%). BNP, LDs, UKIP and Greens did not stand in this ward in 2007. 17% swing from Con to BNP.

Well done to Stevenage Labour Party on their results, which are fantastic given the national opinion poll context confirmed by YouGov today - and very heartening in a key parliamentary marginal. Proof for Labour activists in the run up to 1 May that hard work at a local level can mean you buck the national trend.

yes, very good results in Stevenage. Increasing % compared to 2005 CC elections held on GE day (so with a big turnout) is very good.
And as for Pin Green, here's Lab % in the last few elections:
2007: 51.6
2006: 52.4
2004: 46.5
2003: 54
2002: 59.3

So we should go back to 2002 to find a better result for Labour

You obviously have no knowledge of this seat, Luke. Tories managed to win the parliamentary seat here in '83/87/92 without any Tory councillors locally.

We also held it in 2005 despite losing three nearby Hertfordshire marginals. The perception inside the Labour Party since 1997 is that Stevenage CLP has a significantly better campaign machine than most comparable new town CLPs and that rather than demographic factors is driving their relatively better performance.

The Tories had councillors on Stevenage BC through until the mid-1990s. They then returned to the Borough Council in 1999 following all out elections. They have not gained a seat since then and their group leader defected to UKIP recently.

But what would've happened if the BNP had stood in Stevenage...this is getting desperate; we need to show we're on the side of the working class of all races.

Well the latest Poll looks very bad for Labour in general. Labour now only 29% just 12% ahead of the Lib Dems. The Conservatives on 43% so they are slowly increasing their lead.

Latest economic outlook for the UK is very poor with very strong signs of a recession. The "No More Boom Bust Man" has lost his slogan.

As for showing you are on the side of the working classes, what a joke. Labour are importing it's workers to keep wages down to control inflation.

Bring on election day.
