Labour growing on London councils
Slightly counter-intuitive given the national polls, but Labour in London is going through a remarkable period in terms of councillor defections to us from other parties. In the three adjoining boroughs of Haringey, Hackney and Tower Hamlets in 13 months we've had two defections from Lib Dem to Labour in Haringey, one from Lib Dem to Labour in Hackney and five from the various successor parties of Respect to Labour in Tower Hamlets, including four this week.

"slightly counter-intuitive"?! if you think that we can get out of the hole we're in (25% of the vote, worse than under Michael Foot) by a bit of backstage armtwisting in the council chamber, you're having a laugh.

I hardly think the defection of four of the Respect mob in Tower Hamlets indicates a swelling tide of opinion to Labour amongst the 99.9% of the population who didn't vote Respect last time

Actually in those 3 boroughs we did get "more votes" on 1 May 2008 than in the previous comparable elections in 2004. A lot more.
There are also 2 opposition held seats in this patch - Hornsey & Wood Green and Bethnal Green & Bow that would be useful gains in a tight election, and one (Poplar & Limehouse) that the Tories until 1 May had some hopes of gaining in a 3-way fight with Labour and Galloway.

It's a bit like Zimbabwe. Some of us are getting the hell out of London because we can't stand you lot and your councils any more. So, relatively speaking, that's one more vote for Labour.
