NEC Ballot

Labour Party members should have received their NEC ballot paper by now. I would recommend voting for:

NEC:
Azhar Ali
Deborah Gardiner
Sonika Nirwal
Ellie Reeves
Peter Wheeler
tactically it makes sense to not use your sixth vote

Treasurer:
Jack Dromey (reluctantly - in my case the deciding factor was receiving an invite to join "Labour Friends of Palestine" on Facebook from his rival Mark MacDonald)

Auditor:
Kevin Hepworth
Michael Leahy

If you are a councillor you get some extra votes. Choices are a bit more nuanced here as there is no Grassroots Alliance slate running but I settled on:

NEC Local Govt Reps:
Sir Jeremy Beecham
Ann Lucas

NEC Joint Local Govt Cttee:
Caitlin Bisknell
Mehboob Khan

NPF
Jamie Carswell
Pauleen Lane
Roger Lawrence
Irene MacDonald

Not having a brain I'm so pleased that I now know how to vote - what would we do without you Luke. Thank you, thank you!

What's wrong with Palestine? Mark McD is a moderate 2 stater.

For God's sake, change your moniker.

And for that matter, change your pic.

You look like a testorone-challenged 14-year-old - a somethat genetically retarded version of Luke.

Just make sure that whoever you vote for has enough wonga in the bank to meet their responsibilities under the joint and several liability of officials and NEC members for the debts of the party when declared insolvent.

Slightly curious how Ellie Reeves managed to apparently get on both slates - how does that work?

This cracked me up. I go for the bratty look, what can I say?

I'll try to think of a better name. I reckon I'd come accross as taking myself a bit over-seriously if I started writing out my full name everywhere.

Apparently someone on the GRA slate didn't get nominated or something, so they backed Ellie.

Which is fair enough, but I would have voted for her whether they backed her or not. Top candidate.

Luke, it was hoped that the campaign for Treasurer would have made people
focus on the real issues affecting our party. It is shame that you
have decided to vote on the basis on what would seem a totally
unrelated issue of raising the issue of Palestine within the labour
movement and provide a forum for constructive debate with Labour
Friends of Israel; whose primary objective like LFP is to encouraging
a dialogue between Israel and Palestine.

All sensible choices, apart from treasurer which you appear to have made on totally the wrong basis. It would be a strange political person that agreed 100% with the views of another political person, usually you'll have broad areas of agreement and smaller areas where you don't.

But this is an internal election for Labour Party treasurer - therefore you vote on the issues directly related. Mark's views on Israel/Palestine are irrelevant. If you don't support Jack Dromey as treasurer (which is what you strongly hint at) then he is a very good choice.

Actually I have broader concerns that Mark's politics are nearer to Compass than they are to mine.

Excellent. I shall definitely vote for Mark then!

Thanks - I was trying to work out which the sensible ones were. But there is of course even less point in voting in this election than in a general election given that, even in these difficult times, the constituency has about three times as many people in it as a parliamentary one has and thus my voting is even less likely to influence the result. Now remind me why I spend so much of my free time trying to convince people that it's worth voting!

actually turnout is so low (20%) that you have a lot more influence in this ballot than in electing an MP.

Last time the 6th place winner got less than 14,000 votes and another 7 candidates got over 10,000.

So if I had had 4,000 votes I could have made a difference!

Still failing to grasp how the Palestine/Israel conflict should make me not vote for Mark? Why is LFP an organisation to be opposed? They aren't against Israel just against violence against Palestinians and their right to have a state of their own. Am I right or am I missing something Luke?

The House of Loves (2) have voted for only Ellie Reeves (1) and Sonika Nirwal (1) and one of the auditors (Hepworth, 2) from your pick. The rest of our votes :

Azam
Black
Kenyon
Shawcroft
Willsman all (2)

McDonald (2)

Lavery (2)

And I commend this slate to Luke's readers one and all.

The NEC constituency reps are supposed to represent the grassroots Luke; not be super numeraries for the party's top table. Whipping this vote from the centre is a bit pathetic really. The Unions already do the super numerary thing, mostly ignoring their own policy.

The Friends of Palestine Facebook Group can not be taken as serious apostacy Luke, what are you on about? You could have joined for a bit of relaxing spying, ready for a denuciation follwing the cultural revolution.

Can the kid add up? Yes! Is he on top of the legals? Yes, he is a barrister! Will he be fobbed off or run rings round? No!

Try the same with Dromey and on track record you get two negatives and a positive. He has been bloody useless in terms of doing the job AND he hasn't delivered the 4th Option yet either!

In the absence of any manifesto anywhere I found the recommendations very helpful.

There were a few names on the ballot I recognised but didn't really know who exactly what was on which slate.

Your advice accompanied by all these comments from your avid readers quickly revealed who was who ;-)

So I have not used my sixth vote as tactically advised, but I don't really follow how that works!

A point to bear in mind is that not all members of the CLGA are as bad as each other.

I would far rather have Ann Black than Peter Kenyon on the NEC and I reckon you would too, Luke - why not vote for her as your sixth position to make it that bit more likely that Shawcroft, Kenyon, Willsman etc will be kept off the NEC?
