Council by-elections
Glenrothes wasn't the only by-election last night. There were also these 4 council by-elections:
Forth Ward, Edinburgh CC. Lab hold. 1st pref votes: Lab 2013 (29.5%, +0.5), SNP 1841 (27%, +4.3), Con 1180 (17.3%, -2.9), LD 985 (14.5%, -3.4), Green 341 (5%, -0.8), Ind 297 (4.4%, +2.6), Solidarity 80 (1.2, -0.6), SSP 53 (0.8%, n/c), Ind 26 (0.4%, +0.4). Swing of 1.9 % from Lab to SNP since 2007.
Ballieston Ward, Glasgow CC. Lab hold. 1st pref votes: Lab 2257 (46.9%, +5.2), SNP 2027 (42.1%, -2.5), Con 225 (4.7%, -0.3), LD 142 (2.9%, -0.2), SSP 88 (1.8%, +0.7), BNP 46 (1.0%, -0.4), Green 32 (0.7%, -0.2). Swing of 3.9% from SNP to Lab since previous by-election this summer. This is a ward in Glasgow East where the SNP won both the parliamentary by-election and consequent council one just a few months ago.
Whissendine Ward, Rutland CC. Ind gain from Con. Ind 154 (41.3%), Con 148 (39.7%) , LD 71 (19%). Uncontested Con in 2007.
Valley Ward, LB Waltham Forest. Con hold. Con 1183 (50.2%, -9.5), LD 734 (31.2%, +10), Lab 439 (18.6%, -0.5). Swing of 9.8% from Con to LD since 2006.

O/T but Blears goes down further in the national estimation by calling you her favourite blogger.
If all that is needed to be a Government minister's fave blogger is to be a party lickspittle who'll say black is white if needed, and thinks the very best posts are the ones telling Labour supporters not to question their Government at all ever but merely work for its return (for no or any specified purpose), then democracy's in trouble.

Who'd be a Tory right now? Fancy seeing your party almost at the top, on the verge of power, only then to slowly slide down the pole towards another election defeat. How long will it be before the whispering starts in the Commons tearooms? "That David Cameron. Don't you think he looks awfuly tired?".

The conservatives aren't actually that far ahead at the moment...to my horror. Probably only about 5% in it to be honest and if there was an election next week the norm is a 6% swing to the ruling power....narrow win for Labour.
For some crazy reason people trust Brown over the opposition with respect to the crisis. Personally I think the only sensible politician throughout this whole crisis is Vince Cable MP. He predicted this mess and knows how to get us out of it. It's a pitty we don't have him as chancellor.
I still think the blame lies with Brown but obviously I don't represent the millions of voters ticking Brown at the moment.

Won't happen Mark, the only way Labour will change is when they are made to by being defeated at the box. Even then there is a big chance we are going to end up with an American style political system with little choice.
These days spin matters more than real policy. If you can make the people think you are doing a great job when your not then you will win.
Just look at the last ten years. We have been constantly told about how good a chancellor Brown is and how amazing he his to keep inflation under control. But the reality is the real inflation figures don't take into account house prices. If they did inflation would be close to 20%. We all knew that house prices could not carry on they way there were and so did the government.
They knew a crash was coming and they knew about the problems of self cert mortgages years ago so why is Brown blaming the US.....obviously to divert attention from his own failings. Britain has as much as a problem as the US and in some ways we have far bigger problems. So wHy do 80% of people think Brown is the man for the job.......it's call SPIN.
The result is the boom and bust cycles which will be with us until we have a political party brave enough to accept that we have to control growth in all sectors using financial mechanisms such as interest rates. House prices would not have seen the type of growth if they were inflation lined....FACT.

This Country is stupid_Housing inflation is always looked on as a good thing. for the last few years I have become sick and tired of people boasting how much money their house has gone up in monetary value. Time and time again I heard people saying I bought this 3 bed ex council House in 1998 for £62,000 and now it's worth £490,000 blah, blah, blah.
Things really need to change and Housing costs both rented and Mortgaged need to come down to affordable levels and maintained at price levels well within working class peoples means. The economy should be controlled.
A good sustainable economy would be to have low Housing costs.
The government try to tackle inflation well after the horse has bolted. Now they are trying to curb pay rises, in comparison with house prices wage rises have been peanuts and holding down pay increases will have little affect in dampening inflation!

I agree, lets face facts the average salary outside London is lower than 20,000 pa...on that basis the average house should be below £100,000 rather than the £270,000 it was just over a year ago.
If this government honestly thought the housing boom was sustainable then they are so out of touch with what real people earn.
Making matters worse there are now millions of buy to let landlords who were stupid enough to buy portfolios on mortages which in turn is forcing rents up due to the high cost of borrowing. This should never been allowed and I could see this mess coming years ago.
Gordon Brown was so eager to promote the booming economy without thinking that the whole lot has been built on a over inflated property market. Once people were unable to access credit the whole economy falls over. So eager is Brown to get the mess resolved that he wants to oil the wheels of the credit industry to get borrowing back to 2007 levels. Suddenly the whole scenario starts all over again.
Now they are raiding pension pots in order to raise revenue. We are facing the biggest pension crisis we've ever seen all because of this.
Brown should be sacked and not praised.

Its like a gambling addiction-They lose all their money then borrow even more to gamble with-But this time its not their money but all of ours?
The right wing Labour cabinet members are millionaires and have additional incomes. They can earn money for old rope. Believing an astronomical housing boom could be sustained with average wages in London on £30K and outside less than £20K is dam right stupid! Or has this been a conspiracy all along and they knew what was coming? It could have been to devalue workers wages and increase Capitalist profits as they can now make a killing on the stock exchange!
