The most influential people in local government
The Local Government Chronicle has published its annual list of the 50 most influential people in local government.
The Labour names in the list are as follows - interesting that 2 of the 8 Labour Councillors or Mayors in the list are from my own borough of Hackney:

maybe a stupid question but why is the deputy mayor higher up the list than the mayor?

Because he has a London-wide job as London Councils' housing lead member and is on Labour's National Policy Forum.

Hackney Council policy of intimidation under investigation
AN INDEPENDENT investigation is being held into claims that market inspectors were told to 'target' the metric martyrs of Ridley Road.
The investigation will be led by former Tower Hamlets Council legal chief, Mark Norman, who will look into allegations that Hackney council's market inspectors were ordered to keep a special eye on the activities of Colin Hunt and Janet Devers, the metric martyrs who have defied rulings to serve in metric rather than imperial measures at their stalls at Ridley Road, Dalston.
Three former market inspectors have made the allegations and Mr Norman is likely to speak to them, Josile Munro, the head of trading standards in Hackney, Cllr Alan Laing, who has cabinet responsibility for neighbourhoods and other council officials as well as the metric martyrs themselves.
A Hackney Council spokeswoman said the council takes the allegations seriously.
Mrs Devers faces a trail at Snaresbrook Crown Court next month for using imperial measures on her stall and has lodged an appeal following a similar conviction at Thames magistrates last month.
Her brother Colin Hunt was prosecuted in 2001 for using imperial measures.
The Metric Martyrs campaign is calling for these convictions to be overturned and has questioned whether it is a good use of public money to prosecute traders using old-style measures.

Lord Low, very interesting and very disgusting conduct from a council. When you read the report of Baby P and the fact that the government was warned 6 months prior it highlights what the priorities of Labour really are.
They are all so eager to catch market traders trading in imperial but happy to let the abuse of baby P continue.
This government and all your councils are vile.

I am happy to accept that Jules Pipe and Jamie Carswell are amongst the most influential people in local government, but having occasionaly attended Hackney Council meetings I doubt whether they, or any other councillors, could be described as being among the fifty most infuential people in Hackney.
The entire culture is one of blind faith in anything that officers say without even the simplest questions of clarification from members.
