Taking the fight to Cameron's backyard
Congratulations to my friend and fellow alumnus of Bristol University Labour Club, former Labour Students National Chair Joe Goldberg, who has been selected as Labour's Parliamentary Candidate against David Cameron in Witney.
I don't think Witney is at the top of Labour's target list as Cameron has a 14,000 majority, but it's important that a strong Labour candidate takes on the Tory Leader to keep them busy defending their own backyard during the General Election.
Joe is an experienced campaigner and I think the right candidate has been picked for the job of taking the fight to Cameron's home patch.

Why would making divorce harder make couples happier. Surely you stay together because you love each other and not because of a contract.
I think the tories have lost the plot and should keep their hands off family life. If they really want to help families try giving them more time through reduced working hours, more amenities such as parks and less financial stress.

It's not about making people happier, although that of course is important - it's about maintaining the family structure and discouraging marriage breakup which should only be a very last resort in extreme circumstances.

So anonymous what you are saying is that unhappy couples should be forced to stay together? Or maybe even people who are suffering domestic violence should be forced to stay with their husband/ wife. I am sure that this will really help children who grow up in these kind of families.

The trick for candidates in non-key seats is to do both - both lead and facilitate twinning activity with nearby marginals and lead a high visibility, low resource campaign in their own seat, providing tasks for people who only want to work their own patch. My experience in Aldershot in 2001 when we were twinned with (and lent our key activists to) Portsmouth N is that the personal lead set by the candidate is key - if they work their socks of in their own seat, and are also seen to make time for the seat they are twinned with, members will follow their example and do more of both.

Joe Goldberg is one of the fattest men I ever met. I heard a rumour that he went off to work for Mars - the confectioners.
Talk about putting a drunk in charge of a brewery!
He's also a former chair of Labour Students - one of the worst people ever to have filled that role.
In other words, he's a nonentity just like Luke, someone whose climbed the greasy pole of student politics and believes a seat in the Commons is theirs for the taking.
Thanks to Brown being so hopelessly out of touch, an unpopular, unelected cretin, the likes of goldbarg have next to no chance of making it into Parliament.

Never really got on with Joe, one of the most abrasive people I ever met as an NUS opponent. However, I am quite taken with this, and think the campaign will be worth watching. I for one would love to see Joe take on Cameron face-to-face.

Before getting stuffed by Cameron though, he's fighting the Seven Sisters by-election in Haringey. No mention of baby P in the glossy labour leaflets thus far...

Joe is tweeting about his few activities in Witney, but the local newspaper hardly mentions him. He called me a 'Johnny come lately' for declaring my Independent candidacy after he had been candidate for a while, but didn't do his research on me. I canvassed my first door in the Witney constituency in 1998 and reckon I am on track to beat Joe Goldberg. I got 3 times the Labour vote as an Independent in my county council ward in June.
