Boris Johnson, biscuit snatcher

I attended my first meeting of the Labour Party's London Regional Board last night. Most of it I won't be blogging about (there's a limited audience for online reports of the rules revision process for the GLLP Biennial Conference) but there was an interesting London Assembly Labour Group report by John Biggs AM.

It seems Boris is making some rather petty cuts. Two examples:

  • He has cut the budget for the biscuits that used to be given to school kids visiting City Hall.
  • The London Living Room (on the top floor of City Hall) used to be available free to charities to host events. Now they have to pay 50% of the rental price - about £2000 - so most of them aren't using a space that was supposed to be accessible to all Londoners.

Stylish and thoughtful budgeting there Boris. Though what we would expect from a Tory Mayor.

I'm sure this is just a prudent measure designed to tackle obesity.

Maybe if government bodies didn't wast so much cash on ridiculous projects like this one to promote potatoes to schoolchildren - http://dizzythinks.net/2008/12/government-website-of-day.html - then maybe there'd be a few more public pennies to spend on the odd biccy or two.

Or maybe if London's finances weren't burdened with a burgeoning Olympic debt, for a project that will have hardly any benefits for Hackney (or its potato-eating children)...

Or maybe you should just start a national crusade for everyone to hand their 3p coffee change to poor wee mites who can no longer shove their faces full of quite so many jammy dodgers at the taxpayers' expense.

Calm down. This is satire, right, Luke?

Petty cuts eh?
How about looking at the list of approved suppliers to City Hall.
How would you feel as MD of a company forced to pay £500 for a box of A4 paper?
How would you feel about a member of your board presenting a £600 bill for a taxi that waits for him while he attends a meeting?
How about this one. 800 employees at City Hall under the tadpole man. 400 under Boris. Petty cuts!!!!
Any comments Luke?

The LibDems in Liverpool have done exactly the same with the Town Hall. The fee for an event is now £500 which has totally removed charities who used to get it for free.

Had Ken stayed as an Independent Candidate Boris would not be there now. Being associated with the LP really lost him the vote, because of the incompetence of these right wingers in the Cabinet many LP (MP's, in by-elections) and Councillors are losing their seats

I'd prefer Boris over Ken any day. The man was a nutter.
