While it is very sad that Woolworths will be no more, I think most people can honestly say they saw it coming.
This company has failed to modernise and their margins are just too slim to make it on the modern high street. I fear many of the price cutting giants will also go the same way.
There is, however, some blame to be laid at the large insurance companies that refused to insure the suppliers of woolworths which in the end made it impossible for Woolworths to trade.
The biggest losers are the staff as they will now have to find jobs in a very competitive market.
I fear the high street will have to adapt very quickly and local authorities seriously need to adjust their business rates to allow smaller business to compete. We need diversity on the high street and we must end our dependence on chain stores and look to individual entrepreneurs for new ideas.

Barbaric!
Which is why I am proud to be British as we don't do those awful things exposed to the public.
We just send them on planes to Jordan or USA Torture camps.

Look I'm not saying that we shouldn't save Woolworth's, if I had the money I would buy it myself. But face the facts, just about every store needs overhauling and modernising and then you have it's debts.
If the government was to buy this chain then they would have to seriously look at changing every aspect of what it does. As nearly all the cut price business models are failing I can't see what Woolworths could do to stem its demise. PC World, Comet, Currys etc etc all have similar problems.
If you lot are so concerned about Woolworths then maybe you should have actually done some shopping there instead of at Tescos.

We are concerned for all workers being made redundant and all avenues need to be explored to save jobs.
A workers co-operative should not be ruled out.
