Labour MP for North Durham since 2024. Labour Party activist since 1988 - firmly on the moderate wing of the party. Member of Labour’s NEC 2010-2012 and since 2020. National Secretary of Labour Students 1995-6. Parliamentary candidate for Aldershot (2001) and Castle Point (2005). Hackney Councillor (Chatham Ward) 2002-2014, Labour Group Chief Whip 2002-09, Chair of Health Scrutiny 2010-2014. Dad. Unite and GMB union member. All views expressed in a personal capacity. I love this 'swing to conservative' stuff. Only under such an absurd system -first-past-the-post, would a party who actually DROPPED percentage share be described in such a way. When are we going to get rid of this rotten system?

I can just picture the scene in Downing Street - "Oh blimey! Look guys, I've just cast a glance over our previous manifesto and you'll never believe this, but, we were supposed to have brought in a fairer voting system under PR by now"

On a more important note this council seat is in the Cheadle Constituency which once upon a time was one of the Conservative Party's strong holds in the North West.
Judging by the current activity or should that be lack of by Cheadle Tories they will probably not regain their seat this time.

During 1979-1997 had we had PR the Tories would never have had such a majority!
During the reign of the Tories many Labour MP's were campaigning for PR!
Why has Labour failed the electorate in bringing in PR?
