Worth staying up for
Glasgow NE result:
Labour - 12,231 votes (59.39%)
SNP - 4,120 votes (20%)
Tory - 1,075 votes (5.22%)
BNP - 1,013 votes (4.92%)
Not sure if that's a 2% SNP to Lab swing as reported by the BBC or a 30% one as Labour didn't stand in the Speaker's seat in 2005.
Either way a great result for Willie Bain and a great result for Labour. As with Glenrothes our team - politicians, staff and activists - showed we are very much alive and kicking.

A good result in difficult times for us. By-elections are normally troublesome for governments of all hues, yet this proved that with a decent campaign Labour can still win.
The Tories were never going to do well here, but it does add something to my theory that the electorate have still do be won over by Mr. Cameron.
There is everything still to be played for.

As Tom Harris MP notes on his site, in the eight years before the 1997 election the Tories won no parliamentary by-elections. But Labour have won loads in the years since 2002 (perhaps Luke you can tell us how many?).
Mr Cameron shows every sign of planning to carry on with the twenty-first-century Tory-leaders' tradition of failing to become PM...

We've defended eight seats in this parliament (counting Glasgow NE which technically wasn't ours I know) and won 4. The tories total byelection gains in this parliament? 2.

It's a great result and I don't want to be the one who rains on the parade, but it has nothing to do with Cameron (except confirm what we all know - that's he's had no impact at all in Scotland and he still does not lead a national party).
This was about Labour versus the SNP and it shows that Salmond's old time music hall act - "it was ra english bassas wha did it" -is running out of steam.

Scary little statistic 81-82% (maths a little shoddy) of the people eligable to vote in Glasgow NE didn't vote for Labour. Time for electoral reform?

What silly right wingers forget is that we can nearly all remember the disaster that was 79-97.
The people of Glasgow can. In my adult lifetime Hillhead was solid Tory til the Tories soiled it from a great height.
