Blaenau Gwent
People looking for an interesting General Election bet might want to put some money on Labour's Nick Smith to regain the traditionally Labour stronghold of Blaenau Gwent from Independent MP Dai Davis who had a majority of under 2,500 in the 2006 by-election.
If the press coverage is anything to go by Mr Davis is coming under some scrutiny and has been found to be a bit less-than-focused on local issues in the House of Commons.
It would be a nice tribute to Michael Foot to see his old seat return to Labour.

Blaenau Gwent is where Labour's communitarian core vote once was. It just show's the danger of cosmopolitan professionals parachuting in outsiders to local seats, and the shear scale of economic and cultural disparity between regions in the UK.

The Labour candidate in 2005 was originally from, I think, Oakdale, and what happened had nothing to do with parachuting (and everything to do with a local favourite being blocked), but, as President Reagan justly pointed out, facts are stupid things.

The veiw on the street is that all recent labour canidates have been parachuted in and would if elected represent labour in BG rather than represent BG in parliament. Besy28 if the population voted for, which they have done, the local favourite - then that goes to show what the people want. I may be stupid - but isn't that democracy
