Byrne on Alexander
Liam Byrne to Danny Alexander today:
"Both the country and the Liberal Democrat party beyond will be aghast this afternoon at your attack on jobs, your attack on construction workers, your attack on the industries of the future and the cancellation of a hospital.
Let me ask you: what could be more front line than this? In five minutes this afternoon you have reversed three years of Liberal Democratic policy of which you were the principal author. What a moment of abject humiliation."

Shameful. All these projects agreed in the last few months of the last government. Not one person on the labour benches seems to acknowledge the serious deficit facing the country. They must take some blame for the structural deficit - this after all is political decision making. All they do is whinge about prospective reduction in spending. I myself have not heard any cuts yet - what I have heard is cancelled unfunded projects.
Could Liam Byrne et al please tell me what areas of public spending they would cut. Would they have gone ahead with all these projects? There were no plans in place - no public spending review to deal with the deficit. We should all be ashamed.

To the previous post, it isn't anywhere as bad as you think it is. In order to cut the deficit we need growth and tax revenue. This is not going to happen with measures like this.
Reports today that they are sacking 10,000 NHS staff next month just another example.

Totally agree, Luke. It is almost as if Keynes never existed and that the FibDems in government have simply swallowed the entire neo-liberal/monetarist solution. Which, of course, a significant section of them certainly believe in anyway, as the Orange Book tendency is very clearly right wing.
These projects were largely investment-related and would have promoted employment. Demand management. Its nothing new.
The monetarist experiment has been tried before and failed. It will do so again

THE RECOVERY HAS BEEN WRECKED.
The TORIES AND LIBS HAVE REALLY SCARED THE PUBLIC INTO BELIEVING WE MUST SLASH PUBLIC SERVICES AND INCREASE UNEMPLOYMENT TO REDUCE SPENDING AND THEY ARE GETTING AWAY WITH IT.

It is clear that the Con Dems are determined to bring recession on everybody.
Don't they teach basic economics at Eton ?

Were'nt you listening when Byrne said there was no money left?
The only honest statement from New Labour in years.

Plenty of money in the banks, oh the conservatives have reduced corporation tax. Enough money for tax cuts on the conservative camp.

Is this the person who said we, as in the country, had no money left??
If you think the economy of a 1 trillion dollar economy will collapse all because of an 80 million loan being stopped then you are fools.

"Don't they teach basic economics at Eton"
Presumably not the economics of socialist la-la land where one can spend ones way out of a recession and where ever increasing public expenditure, increasing taxation, ballooning public sector and shrinking private sector is seen as "growth".
Such "economics" always end in tears whether it be the UK today in 1979 or Chavez's Venezuela. Sooner or later they fail.
