Council by-election results
Back by popular demand - the weekly council by-election results service.
Last night there were three:
North Holme Ward, East Lindsey DC. Lab gain from LD. Lab 142 (27.6%, +27.6), Con 111 (21.6%, +21.6), BNP 102 (19.8%, -4.9), LD 88 (17.1%, -58.2), Ind 72 (14.0%, +14). Swing of 3% from Con to Lab since 2007. This is safe Tory Louth parliamentary constituency.
Ore Ward, Hastings BC. Lab gain from Con. Lab 608 (47.7%, +13.3), Con 475 (37.3%, -13.4), LD 158 (12.4%, -2.5), BNP 33 (2.6%, +2.6). Swing of 13.4% from Con to Lab since 2008. This is in a parliamentary seat the Tories narrowly gained in May.
Earls Barton Ward, Wellingborough BC. Con gain from Ind. Con 639 (48.0%, +18.1), Lab 425 (31.9%, -6.3), LD 229 (17.2%, +17.2), Green 38 (2.9%, +2.9). Swing of 12.2% from Lab to Con since 2007.
Labour took control of Hastings DC from NOC thanks to last night's by-election gain (technically a postponed poll that couldn't be held in May because a candidate died).
4 Comments:
Labour had done pretty decently in Hastings in 2008-10 too. And they lost the parliamentary seat by a narrow margin (which was a decent performance compared to Labour standings in the South).
That ward in Wellingborough must have some councillors with big personal votes. The difference between candidates within the same party in both 2003 and 2007 were quite big

Amusing first comment on the Hastings result at ConHome. S/he suggest it must have been postal vote fraud. http://tinyurl.com/3xqwnfh
Nah, nothing to do with a really good Lab candidate, Michael Wincott, and a dose of reality under the Tories then.

Andrea is right about Earls Barton ward and personal votes. In 2007 when this ward last voted, this 3 member ward elected 1 Lab, 1 Con and 1 Ind - with both the Labour and Independent winning through personal votes.
Nevertheless, this was a still a good result for the Conservatives - who haven't managed to top the poll in Earls Barton since at least 1991 - and a disappointing one for Labour.
The candidates who stood this time were largely unknown - only the Labour candidate had stood here before - so I'd guess that this is how Earls Barton votes when there isn 't a personal vote in play!
