The most extraordinary Focus leaflet ever?

This is probably the most extraordinary Lib Dem leaflet I've ever seen:

The key bit reads: "“The main reason we are writing to you is to ask what you would like us to do, seeing as the Liberal Democrats have chosen to form a coalition with the Conservatives, never considering the people in the deprived north.
...
We are ashamed, as you are, of what the National Lib Dems have done in joining the Conservatives.”

LibDems will say ANYTHING for a vote in their focus newsletters - they should be ashamed

If you read what they are saying, its that they don't support the coalition, and as the only two LD councillors on the council, are asking whether they should go it alone, join Labour, or stay in the LD's

I don't know this couple, but lets not be too critical. There are some good people in the LD's, and some of them are horrified by whats going on but very uncertain as to what to do (and many of us have felt the same way when we haven't agreed with a Labour government)

So, if social democrats within the LD's want to come over to join us - I say welcome them, for they can bring voters with them too and often support much the same ideas. Certainly they are far closer to us than Clegg's neo-liberals who worship the market ideologically, rather than approaching it pragmatically.

I can't read what they are saying because the writing is too small. However I do agree with Merseymike that this pair should be applauded for asking a question which must be on the minds of so many Lib Dem councillors and MPs.

They must do what they think is best. However, I do not see that joining Labour makes much sense as Labour would be cutting now anyway. And also, there is the question of Labour's deep authoritarianism. The latter concern may be eased in time as Ed Miliband is saying some mildly encouraging things in this regard.

The Labour party is crap as it does not offer trade union rates to RMT members and is far to expensive to join.

Anon - that is because the RMT is no longer affiliated to the party.

Blame Bob Crow ;-)

I understand that out of the responses they received, most people wanted them to stay with the Lib Dems, so they are.

I see much more of this sort of thing coming along. Nick Cleggs decision to support some very hard conservative policies has worried many Lib Dems.

We'll see what happens to the lib dems when they start to see their votes crumble. I have a feeling Clegg will defect to the torys.

As far as I can make out the text reads

“Dear resident,

First of all we would like to thank all the people in Dearne South that voted for Sarah in the local election on May 6. She achieved the highest amount of votes than any Liberal Democrat has ever received in Barnsley and still didn't win.

The main reason that we are writing to you is to ask what you would like us to do, seeing as the Liberal Democrats have chosen to form a coalition with the Conservatives, never considering the people in the deprived north. This will not make any difference to how we work for you we being Barnsley Council and our villages.

We are ashamed, as you are, over what the National Lib Dems have done on joining the Conservatives. Since 1964 I have had faith in the Liberals thinking that they were principled, perhaps they were in years gone by after this election.

We have always said that you are the “Masters” and we are the “Servants”, those were not just idle words, we meant them, and we still do.

We will keep you informed by sending out our quarterly newsletter to keep you informed about our three villages Bolton, Goldthorpe and Highgate. More importantly we will always be honest and principal, and work as hard as necessary.

There are three alternative ways to choose and would you please let us know your wishes.

1. Go it alone.
2. Join the Labour party.
3. Stay as a Liberal Democrat.

All contact details overleaf.” (this presumably includes the imprint).

Off the subject but I have recieved a news letter from our union bosses regarding the min wage.

Luke I have a news letter regarding the min wage. Is it true that there is a private members bill that will effectively make the min wage defunct.

It has something to do with the New Deal Programme. Due to this being a private members bill I'm unable to obtain any details.
