Council By-elections
Results last night, with the trend of the LDs slumping badly in urban areas confirmed by the Camden result in a ward which had 3 LD councillors until May:
Kentish Town Ward, LB Camden. Lab hold. Lab 1411 (53%, +16.4), LD 715 (26.9%, -4.1), Green 349 (13.1%, -2.1), Con 186 (7%, -5.4). Swing of 10.3% from LD to Lab since May this year.
Springbank Ward, Cheltenham BC. LD hold. LD 722 (66.4%, -2.8), Con 188 (17.3%, -13.5), Lab 142 (13.1%, +13.1), Green 35 (3.2%, +3.2). Swing of 5.4% from Con to LD since May this year.
East Kilbride West Ward, South Lanarkshire Council. Lab hold. First preferences: Lab 847 (41.4%, +0.8), SNP 571 (27.9%, -2.4), Con 403 (19.7%, +5.7), Green 82 (4%, +0.2), EKA 71 (3.5%, -0.7), LD 70 (3.4%, -3.7). Swing of 1.6% from SNP to Lab since 2007.

Interesting results.
Seems that the coalition's HB proposals have gone down really badly in London but have struck a bit of a chord in Scotland.
Possibly because the scottish electors do not realise how expensive rental accomodation is in London?
Also, the change %'s you list for Kentish Town do not net off to zero. Is there an error in the change %'s or a party who had a candidate in the previous election, missing from the list?

What's your explanation, because the Tories vote in East Kilbride goes against all recent Scottish polls?

Why is it apparently ok for the former equalities minister to call someone a ginger rodent but not ok for someone to be called a pak*?
Would it be acceptable to call Diane Abbott a black rodent?
Or is the reality of the equalities act that discrimination is not applicable to white people?

Dear me, Harriet certainly seems to have put the cat amongst the pidgeons if not the Picts amongst the Scots, many of whom sport red hair.
Apart from being an appalling remark from a former Equalities Minister, who would incarcerate those who make offensive remarks over race, colour or creed, it really wasn't very clever in Scotland, the ancestral home of the redhead.
Returning to by-election results, I seem to recall that it was only a little while ago that Labour were dismissing local results as being unindicative of peoples voting intentions in general elections. How times change and how little minds are so easily pleased.

Get real Luke, if someone had called Diane Abbott a black rodent the left would have been up in arms,not some lame excuse about preffering that they attacked the policy instead.

I don't think Scottish results are particularly easy to compare because of the SNP presence
What we have here is a small Tory vote and a smaller FibDem vote which appears to have swapped a few voters. Most others are largely unchanged
Thus, its not going to make a huge impact given that neither of those parties were ever competitive here

I've never dismissed local govt by-elections as being unindicitive of wider trends. That's why I have been publishing them here every Friday for 3 years.

Luke, I never said you did dismiss local elections results but I can recall seeing senior government ministers on TV doing so when challenged over their losses when Labour was doing badly. Just find it amusing how politicians, of all parties, attempt to turn things to their advantage when it suits and dismiss them as insignificant when it does not.
Seems to me that local results frequently turn against the party in office, often show low turnouts and, quite frequently, are completely reversed when it really matters.
For years in my home patch we had a Labour MP and a Tory Council. Now we have a Tory MP and Labour have made a gain in the only recent by-election result. Could it be easier to motivate activists and supporters when in opposition?

I just stumbled across this by accident, but I've been looking for days for the result of the East Kilbride West election result from 28th.
Couldn't find it antwhwere. My vote didn't get EKA very far though.
I didn't vote at all for the others. Waste of time the lot of them.
