Please support Gilad Shalit awareness fortnight – 14th to 28th February
• Gilad Shalit has been held in captivity for nearly five years. 14th to 28th February is Gilad Shalit awareness fortnight, which aims to bring attention to Shalit’s ongoing captivity in the Gaza Strip at the hands of Hamas – who kidnapped the soldier, then 19 years old, in a cross-border raid in 2006.
• In contravention of the Third Geneva Convention, Hamas have denied Shalit access to the outside world. His precise whereabouts is unknown and Hamas refuse to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit him, thus denying his right to humane treatment. Apart from one video recording released in 2009 Hamas have provided no information on his health.
•Gilad Shalit awareness fortnight is being led with the Embassy of Israel and ten Jewish community organisations. The campaign will take place across the UK, and will include events in London, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham.

Given that Israel have kept millions of Palestinians captive since the invasion, I have better things to worry about.

Mordechai Vanunu was kidnapped by the Israelis (an illegal act) and imprisoned in solitary confinement for many years for revealing what many people knew or suspected for a long time--that Israel had nuclear weapons.
I must have missed the Israeli Embassy's promotion of Mordechai Vanunu week.

Ironically, Hamas very much seems to have received covert assistance in the past from the Israeli government. Such claims do have a great deal of credibility as the PLO was traditionally secular and Hamas is, of course, religious.
If true, then this would be another example of "blowback".

Merseymike - DONT YOU SEE?! the people israel have kept are terrorists, people who have murdered thousands of israelis, ruined lives and destroyed families?! and what has Gilad done; nothing. they are keeping him hostage just to get their 'men' back so they can go and kill more israelis. How can you be so narrow minded??
