some great results there Luke for Labour, so very encouraging.

Northern wipeout for LD's could clean sheet many councils

and the Cambridge March result is excellent and shows us winning votes in the south again

Before anyone comments about the changes in Wigan not making sense, the seat that was up last night was won by the Conservatives in 2008. The sitting Conservative councillor up for re-election in 2010 left and stood for Wigan Independent Conservatives, taking a large chunk of the Conservative vote, so that Labour won the seat.

Note that in 2010 the Conservative and Independent Conservative outpolled Labour, but in yesterday's byelection Labour was higher than the combined total.

For info the Cardiff (Pontcanna/Riverside) seat was vacated by former Chief Exec of Plaid Cymru. This was a pathetic Plaid vote given that today was also the referendum on law making powers for our glorious Assemberlee ...

Yes great results all around

well done to candidates

The result in rural Cambridgeshire was excellent

clear we are opposition to Tories

if UKIP now stand in more rural areas we will pick up numerous more rural seats

lets make sure we have as many candidates as possible standing in May and get after this Coalition of Millionaires

Lets also target Tory/Lib Dem Council leaders - for decapitation
with well placed independents

so Nick Clegg says cannot read anything into Barnsley because of low turnout

I guarantee Barnsley had a better turnout than we get on the AV referendum

Fantastic - Labour gain 2 council seats out of >10000. Keep it up, you might have more than 18 councils sometime next decade!

The press are making a great deal of the Lib Dems parliamentary by-election woes but the fall in the Tory vote in both Barnsley and OES is more significant because it is in line with their performance in the 22 local council by-elections held to date in 2011.

The Tories have lost 6 of the 15 seats they were defending, 4 to Labour and 2 to their coalition partners.

According to the tables shown on the ALCS web-site, the Tories are defending 5041 seats in May and the Lib Dems defending 1837.

I wonder how many are going to lose?

I think labour need to work on the tensions between the conservatives and the lib dems. This coalition can't and won't last and going on recent polls the conservative party will have no right govern.

It's not clear what the lib dems hope to achieve from this deal other than end up with no seats after the next election. Nick Clegg seems completely wreckless about his reputation and the lies he told that gave his party a handful of seats. He has upset a generation that will be voting for 60 years, not a good move.

The FibDems are collapsing up here. And there are loads of NW marginals which we can win as their votes disproportionately go our way here - they deliberately presented themselves as to the left of us so their voters in the main aren't Tory-leaning

The Cardiff result is encouraging as Pontcanna is full of Guardianistas likely to have been miffed over Iraq, and Wigan central is actually a renamed Swinley seat, which could have been drawn to ensure a safe Tory seat in the town
