Council by-election

Only one tonight:

Madeley Ward, Newcastle-under-Lyme BC. LD gain from Lab. LD 617 (47.7%, +21.7), Lab 342 (26.4%, -7.9), Con 294 (22.7%, -8.9), UKIP 41 (3.2%, -4.8). Swing of 14.8% from Lab to LD since 2011.

Ouch.

Perhaps worth noting that the victorious LibDem took votes from everyone, not just Labour.

There has to be a reason for such an "out-of-the-blue" result, but nobody seems sure what it is yet.

Does this mean that calamity-Clegg is now on course to become PM in 2015?

What with this result and his main rival for the leadership being up before the beak, he must have a new-found spring in his step this morning...

It's a very small ward - just over 3,000 electors, so turnout normal for a council by-election. Previous history of volatility - elected a Lab cllr in 06, a Tory in 07 and 08, a Lib Dem (with Labour in third place) in 2010, and Lab last year.
