Quite a good article by Luke.
Except:
"How about restating our commitment to NATO and to renewing our Trident strategic nuclear deterrent, so that we have a national security insurance policy in a dangerous world?"
Luke has inadvertently made the case for not having nuclear weapons. An 'insurance policy' does not prevent something from happening, does it?
If somebody has car insurance, does that mean that they will never crash? I don't think so!
Similarly, having nuclear weapons does not prevent us from being attacked.
In a recent Commons debate, Labour's Niok Brown said:
"The possession of an independent (sic) nuclear deterrent (sic) does not make us safer."
