A blog by Luke Akehurst about politics, elections, and the Labour Party - With subtitles for the Hard of Left. Just for the record: all the views expressed here are entirely personal and do not necessarily represent the positions of any organisations I am a member of.
My Progress column this week is a response to Jack Straw's call for abolition of the European Parliament:

"It represents a kind of chauvinism too often found in the Commons where MPs think that the world revolves around Westminster and that being an MP is the only worthwhile political office to hold..."
A worse problem is so many MPs thinking that holding ministerial office is all that really matters.
Peter Mandelson complained about his career being ended when all that happened was that he was sacked from the cabinet.
As a backbencher, I think that Margaret Hodge has improved a lot lately.
Where would we be without MPs who did not seek government office, people like Syd Silvermann?
