Council by-election
There was only one council by-election yesterday but it was a significant result. Labour gained a knife-edge marginal seat from the Tories in Trafford, one of only two Metropolitan boroughs they still control, and in a ward bordering onto Wythenshawe & Sale East where there is soon to be a parliamentary by-election.

Sorry, there's probably a good explanation for this but I'm a bit confused by the numbers here.
The Labour vote went down, the Tory vote went up and yet it's a gain for Labour? How come?

Because this is a ward that elects its 3 councillors one per year. So the change figures are since 2012 which was when Labour already won one of the three seats, but the actual seat contested and gained was last fought in 2011 or 2010 when the Tories won it.

Thanks for the explanation - that makes sense!
