The Hackney Wick fire
Hat-tip to Dave Hill (http://davehill.typepad.com/claptonian/) for posting a dramatic picture of how the fire in Hackney Wick yesterday looked from Hackney Town Hall. The tower blocks in the picture are the Trelawney Estate in my ward:
I watched the column of smoke develop from the 35th floor of a city office block from just after 12.10. Very awe inspiring. You could see flashes of orange flames and as the fire brigade got the thing under control, you could see the shape of the clouds of smoke change.
Was at my publishers Lawrence and Wishart in Hackney Wick today. You can see the burnt out carcass really clearly out of their big-sized windows. It looks like a fallen-down house of cards now. Seems a bit suspicious that the building was empty and it would have had to have been demolished anyway...
