Just three council by-elections last night, with a
dramatic Labour gain from the Greens in Brighton:
Hanover & Elmgrove Ward, Brighton & Hove UA. Lab
gain from Green. Lab 1396 (39.8%, +8.8), Green 1358 (38.7%, -14.6) Con 275 (7.8%,
-1.5), UKIP 250 (7.1%, +7.1), TUSC 172 (4.9%, +2), Lib Dem 56 (1.6%, -1.9).
Swing of 11.7% from Green to Lab since 2011. This ward is one of the strongest
Green wards in Caroline Lucas’s Brighton Pavilion constituency so its loss to
Labour suggests the parliamentary seat is back in play following the recent
poor performance of Brighton’s Green-led council.
Caerhun Ward, Conwy UA. Ind gain from Con. Ind 321
(42.1%, +2.1), Con 170 (22.3%, -18.3), PC 162 (21.3%, +1.9), Lab 109 (14.3%,
+14.3). Swing of 10.2% from Con to Ind since 2012.
Sleaford Holdingham Ward, North Kesteven DC. Ind hold.
Ind 140 (43.5%, -21), Ind 57 (17.7%, +17.7), Con 48
(14.9%, -20.2), UKIP 48 (14.9%, +14.9), Lab 29 (9%, +9). No meaningful swing calculable.
A striking aspect of these three results is the (non) performance of the LibDems. They had no candidate in two of the seats, and limped in sixth with 1.6% of the vote in the only seat where they had a candidate.

ReplyDeleteThanks Neil, have amended.
ReplyDeleteRe the first comment above - there was another vacancy this week, in Forest Heath DC in Suffolk.
ReplyDeleteA previously LibDem seat, they did not even put up a candidate this time. It was gained by an Indie, who defeated the Tories easily.
