Throwing your toys out of the pram...

is never attractive.

Ealing Councillor Gurcharan Singh has demonstrated why he didn't get on Labour's shortlist for the Southall by-election by defecting to the Tories.

It's a shame, as he has been around a long time and been the local GLA candidate on at least one occasion.

But he doesn't seem to have worked out that not everyone can be an MP - particularly if you don't perform well in your NEC by-election panel interview - and that being a member of a political party is about what you believe in, not what position you want.

The Tories may find they get more than they bargained for as their rather less robust constituency association structures may not be well suited to dealing with Cllr Singh's heavy-handed style of factional/communal politics.

"Should cowards flinch, and traitors sneer, we'll keep the red flag flying here."

Incredible. I don't know why the NEC didn't see this coming.

They did but you can't put people on a shortlist because they might get cross if they are not on it. It could have been worse - he could have been our candidate then defected as an MP the first time he didn't get his own way.

My understanding is that these 5 councillors are part of the faction in the CLP who completely opposed it being an All Women Shortlist.

yes, Singh was very against it. He tried to present an AWS as a way to stop him. One of allies (who defected today) was quoted in the local press against the AWS

Shouldn't "Cameron's Conservatives" be asking all 5 councillors to resign and fight by-elections per their comments on Quentin Davies?

Good point re the council by-elections, But slightly wrong re the AWS Luke. One of them with the name "Kaur" in HER name WAS lined up as these chaps' candidate in the event of an AWS.

Have now posted a link rich post on this. The Tories may wake up to what they're getting baggage wise with Gurcharan. Let's hope they slap himinto the Lords alongside wotsit first. To big up community cohesion. He'd be good at that.

Mr Gurcharan Singh is a staunch Khalistani - sikh fanatic and has has encouraged and help create a new younger generation of Fanatic type of Khalistanis amongst the Sikh youth.

Extremist sites like www.sikhsangat.com - sikh politics section, and www.saintsoldiers.net, www.carnage84.com and extremsit videos - on youtube.com, regarding Khalistan show the new wave of anti Indian India, fanatical type Khalistani Sikh , he has helped spawn and encouraged.

Good riddance to this Extremist who pretends to be there for the good of the community

Its important that the authorities keep an eye on this growing fanatacism amongst today sikhs.

They could very well be the new muslim fanatics of the future.

People in repsonsible positions politically should be more careful.

I don't think it's a shame at all. Gurcharan Singh was a very poor candidate for the London Assembly and Labour is better off without him. He was a weak campaigner who performed less well than he should have done on polling day.

He was a drag on Labour's campaign in 2004.

Gurcharan Singh's departure raises the possiblity of running an energetic candidate who can campaign with Ken Livingstone to take the Ealing and Hillingdon seat off Richard Barnes next May.

Our former comrades claim:
"At a national level we are extremely impressed by David Cameron's modern Conservatives and, with the changes that he has now made, we feel that the Conservative Party now best represents our views."

Is the reaction to the demotion of Francis Maude and David Willetts?

Dave hasn't actually launched any policies yet, has he?

I'm always amazed by these- how on earth can you spend xyz years in Labour politics, fighting the Tories at every turn, and then suddenly defect to them ? Some like Richard Balfe got bitter and more right wing over many years, but presumably this guy was still calling himself a socialist up till the point of the shortlist coming out. Shallow, self-serving and devoid of all principles. The Labour Party is better off without him.

On a non-politics related note - I've gathered the impression there are a lot of West Ham fans who read the comments here. Could someone help me out? I'm putting this team's fantasy football squad together and wanted to check who West Ham's first-choice defenders are likely to be. I've picked Konchevsky and Ferdinand in my squad, but I'm not sure whether they'll remain first-choice at the start of the season. In particular, will Upson start at the beginning of the season? Any help appreciated

ta,

Tim

and on a politics-related note - thank goodness this fickle idiot wasn't selected as the Labour candidate.

But 2 things to consider -

1)The obvious point that just because this particular candidate was a numpty doesn't alter the fact that there should be Sikh Labour MPs and aren't - a situation which we should seek to rectify asap (conversion, anyone?), and

2) It would've been interesting to see if this situation would've been avoided with an AWS including a female Sikh.

Surely if you're compiling a West Ham team you can put whoever you like in, regardless of whether they're eligible to play, or whether you own their registration, or which shady middle-eastern businesspeople are involved.
