Walthamstow shortlist

Walthamstow CLP shortlisted for its parliamentary selection last night.

Nadia Sharif withdrew from the contest, and sadly because of ill health so did Laura Bruni.

The GC therefore shortlisted all seven remaining candidates for the final hustings on 4 Nov:

Hina Ansari
Farmida Bi
Stella Creasy
Dora Dixon-Fyle
Jan Etienne
Melanie Johnson
Marie Pye

It's looking a bit unpredictable for the final vote but my sources in the audience say Stella and Farmida made the best speeches.

I think Farmida Bi is the best candidate by far - she's not a professional politician but has excellent experience. That's my fivepence

I hope Dr Ansari wins - judging by her comprehension of issues and intellect, coupled with 17 odd years serving the public as a GP, she has the right mix.

About time an articulate BAME candidate is given an opportunity!

Marie Pye gave the best speech by far, say my sources who were genuinely being objective.

I hope Walthamstow will go for such New Lab rightwingers as Dr Creasy or the amazing (come from nowhere) Dr Ansari.

People I've spoken to in the Stow say members are moving away from the saccharine charms of Stella, and towards Marie Pye as she is seen as trustworthy and serious. Most people don't want smiley lobby fodder as their representative in Westminster - they want someone solid, trustworthy and genuine. She's a very nice woman too by all accounts.

Hina Ansari? Left one minute, right the next depending on who she is talking to. No track record in the party at all, her membership having been renewed only in the last few months. And she is not a GP - she works for Ikea! I wonder why she no longer practises...
