Council by-election results

Last night's council by-election results:

Brighton & Hove, Regency Ward - Green hold with Tories narrowly overtaking Labour to come second.

LB Harrow, Canons Ward - Con hold of a safe ward. Tories down 13%, Labour up 1%

LB Hounslow, Chiswick Riverside Ward - Con hold. Tories up 16%, Labour up 3%, LDs down 7%, Greens down 12%

Merthyr, Treharris Ward - Ind hold with LDs overtaking Lab into 2nd place.

Reigate & Banstead DC, Earlswood and Whitebushes Ward - Con hold but with big swing to LDs.

LB Southwark, Riverside Ward - Lib Dem hold. Lab & LD both up 8%, Greens down 11%, Tories down 7%.

Surrey Heath DC, Bagshot Ward - LD hold with 5% swing to them from Con.

Test Valley DC, Romsey Cupernham Ward - LD hold with a swing to them from Con.

Wychavon DC, Lovett and North Claines - Con hold

Overall aggregate picture across them all was of an increased Lab + LD vote at expense of Tories.

"Green hold with Tories narrowly overtaking Labour to come second"

I think last time a Lab candidate (the incumbent) was ahead of the 2 tories candidates who were ahead of the second Lab candidate. The second Lab candidate was behind the first LD candidate too (the other incumbent IIRC).
So which party was in second last time can be a bit unclear!

All a bit inconclusive, all told. Some good results, others less good for all parties.

Really? From the Labour perspective it looks like you slipped a place in two wards. When you consider your disastrous showing in May 2006 and May 2007 I must congratulate your ability to find crumbs of comfort.

PragueTory, you have the analytical skills of a goat. I am no labour supporter (as anyone who reads this regularly will be aware) but overall, Luke's analysis is a lot better than yours.

The really interesting result there is the Southwark one - the level of squeeze really surprised me, though it was pretty obvious from the beginning it was going to be liberal.

Regency is, as Andrea points out, a real humdinger of a ward, and that by election was always going to be what the Hackney Gazette would term a "turkey shoot".

All eyes on Springfield now, and it's going to be a shocker for Labour.
