Birmingham Ladywood selection

Odd that there hasn't been more attention paid to the Labour parliamentary selection result in Birmingham Ladywood (currently Clare Short's seat, notional Lab majority of 6215 over LD) on Saturday.

The new candidate is 27 year old barrister and Oxford graduate, Shabana Mahmood. I gather from people in the West Midlands that she is likely to be a very bright and talented addition to the PLP.

I find it a little strange that a young Muslim woman getting selected for a Labour-held seat when there have only ever been 3 BME women MPs in history hasn't been celebrated a bit more.

A very long discussion on the selection here, if you're interested. It was a close contest between Shabana Mahmood and Yvonne Mosquito, a local councillor of afro-caribbean origin.

Having bailed out the banks to the sum of £100 billion is the government going to come up with the additional £3.5 billion required to hit the governments child poverty targets. Or is poverty no longer an important issue?

Has the government also got an action plan to help the thousands of people now facing negative equity on their homes.

Tory sleaze is back in the headlines - Giles Chichester, Den Dover ( what a great name for a porn star! ) and Caroline Spelman. The Tories' bleatings about 'the nanny state' should now hopefully cease now that we know Spelman's nanny has been kept by the state!

If she gets elected at the next election - and the way it's going for Labour at the moment, that isn't guaranteed - it will be yet another lawyer with an Oxbridge degree in the House of Commons.

. . . what are we supposed to be celebrating?
