Well the Glasgow east election swung to the SNP (22%).

Turn out was something like 40 odd pc, with SNP wards making a strong showing.

Ted, what do you think about this train wreck?

I still think we need to find a leader in Scotland to harass the SNP urgently.

I think you'll find that the Westminster Church Street swing is TO Conservative.
As people have pointed out swing is too much of a bi-partisan measure to capture some nuances - but what's going on here? The real movement seems to be from Respect to Tory. Do the SWP really prefer the Tories now?

It was just voter fraud. 300 vote win by ####. 17 point turnaround in week I smell a smelly fish and it looks like salmon.

Luke that was disaster for Labour there is no escaping it and if you see a similar swing at the next general election you will be lucky to have a single seat in Scotland.

This result is so bad that it even shocked me. Brown must go and an election must be called.

Luke can you explain to me just who it is in Hackney Council who disgustingly was paid the obscene yearly wage of £310,000 last year!!

Surely no one deserves this obscene amount of pay in a borough with some of the poorest most disadvanatged people in the country.

If you want to know why people are turing their backs on Labour look no further than this

Dirty European Prat may wish to retract his comments, not just because it is such terribly sour grapes and hubris to think that the people must love Labour and only voter fraud can shift them, but it must be libel too.

Well lets face it Labour are not going change their tune and they are going to be defeated at the next general election.

We heard the "We're listening plea" from Tony Blair and now Brown and still the same policies and the same direction.

Only when defeated will Labour reform and their return may take as long as 20 years depending on the level of defeat.

The sad thing about this is that when Labour took power they had a majority that would of allowed them to make a difference. But they failed to take the opportunities and now all the money has gone there is little chance of any real change happening.

There is now real conflict between what the unions want and what the government can actually deliver.

Working people have really lost out as we never got a Labour government. So bad is the situation that people are leaving trade unions because of the current donation row. If Labour are happy to be funded by trade unions then union members want a real voice in parliament. So far I have seen very little evidence of this and is why our union has opted out of Labour party donations. The next one to remove this is the Unite & GMB Unions.

How can Brown talk about helping normal working families when he expects them to accept below inflation pay rises. A lot of working families are not getting any help with rising fuel bills because they earn just a little too much, neither are they getting any help from the warm front grants because they both work. What on earth does Brown think the next stage is going to be.....I can tell him very simply....RECESSION.

I really feel that Brown has let this go on too long and now hardship is inevitable for at least 15 million families.

People are losing their jobs Luke and they are getting screwed because the government failed to reform redundancy system when things were booming. These families will probably lose their homes and up in emergency accommodation because of the failure of this government to reverse the right to buy system.

Wages are falling across the private sector because of the increasing number of people looking for work.

This really is a shit storm of epic proportions. The only option left for the government is to borrow to give tax cuts but how will this help the poorest workers?

Latest reports suggest Brown is about to resign following reports that his cabinet is on the verge of removing him.

The big question is will this result in a general election or will Brown literally walk away from the job.

Well done so a 17 point lead can be changed in week Yeah right oooooooofcourse. The media lets people get away with it time after time. Whay an idiot.

The PM should stay until next year june then have leadership election with a fresh leader when the economy is recovering who can have honeymoon teim and take over.

Here is my plan.
Keep the leader for the next year so he can take the pain of the economic downturn and the defeat any government will get in euro and local elections next year, then immediately after the euro elections start a leadership election with 5 or 6 good candidates. So we can really decide who the best leader is. Rather than a Jack Straw type leader who thinks he deserves it. If we change the leader too early then a new leader would have to face the economic downturn and the defeat in the euro elections so would probabaly end up in the same position as this leader.
A new leader installed in next year , after a beauty pagent of a party conference would have no major elections to fight and probably ecnomic recovery to build on to win the next election. This has to be next year not this year as the economy is in a downturn.
I do not agree with holding an early election or changing the leader too early. As the economy is in a downturn.

Penny Thompson announced: "The mayor and I have agreed that after Hackney making tremendous progress over the past two years I will be moving on, subject to agreement."

They're 'aving a larf! (at our expense).

Easy to explain the wwing of 13.8% from Con to Lab since 2006

"David Alexander De Horne Rowntree"

He is a multi millionaire champagne socialist. His selection is just typical of the arrogant behaviour of the media industry soaked Labour Party. Labour voters are fed up with these hypocrites only in local politics for their own selfish means. The arrogance of this man is astonishing. Typically he is studying to become a barrister. What a surprise.
The Labour party are finished

Dirty Euro, the economic downturn you talk about has only just started. Talk to anyone in business and they will tell you you at least 2012 before we see any improvement.

This isn't just a downturn it will be a full blown recession and house prices are going to lose about 40% of their value. Unemployment is going to hit at least 3.5 million and inflation will hit 5%. The government knows this, the opposition parties know it and so do most accountants and leading economists.

You might think a house price crash is a good thing and in someways it is needed but think about the economic consequences.

Labour have run out of time to make any real difference.

How about commenting on David Marshall (ex Labour MP for Glasgow East) and his £500,000 'office' expenses for his front room whilst his daughter was using it also to run two property firms from?

Or is that subject to 'Legal Reasons' too?

Maybe Dirty Euro, can answer as he/she seems to be an expert in 'smelly' things.

Dave Rowntree might have a few posh middle names but he went to a comp in Colchester, followed by Thames Poly then straight on to work as a computer programmer for Colchester Borough Council. Yes, he is studying to become a barrister but he works at a firm of criminal law solicitors in East London (hardly easy work and definitely not for the champagne sippers). He is a committed opponent of the death penalty and volunteers with Amicus which provides legal representation for those on Death Row in the US (which includes children and a large number of people with mental illness or who are learning disabled).

Sure, he supports the war in Iraq (so he's not all good) but he's got a lot more credibility than many of the upper middle-class public school twits who have never done an honest day's work in their lives and have ruined our party. I wish him well.
