Last night's council by-election results - two very useful Labour gains in the marginal parliamentary seats of Crawley and Rossendale & Darwen.

Good to see another poor result for the BNP. This time in Blaby where they do have some support and organisation (or did have).

"Labour did not field a candidate here due to a clerical error with the nomination papers" - you mean they ballsed up?

I believe that is the technical description.

Which simply isn't on. Its not a difficult prooess and this is usually a Labour ward - we would certainly have won this time. There is really no excuse for throwing away council seats in this sort of way

The Crawley and Rossendale results were encouraging, and the West Sussex result showed a good increase too fir us at the expense of the FibDems which is why we MUST always stand a candidate unless there is a very good reason not to

Maybe they made a clerical error accidentally on purpose to help the independent. I would never countenance such an act but if it keeps out a ConDem in favour of someone half-decent where we don't stand a chance then you can see why they might be tempted.

Unlikely as the ward is a Lab vs Ind marginal. We hold the other 2 seats in the ward.

Great result in Crawley. Given that we lost those by-elections in Kent last month, I was worried that perhaps we would struggle to make inroads in the Southeast.

Agree with Luke - I know this ward and its essentially a safe Labour ward held even last time when Labour did appallingly in Lancaster & Morecambe.

There are all out elections next year when we should win all 3 seats but letting someone get 6 months incumbency is not a good idea particularly as the MBI's tend to be a bit like a local version of the FibDems - claiming credit for everything, populist appeals to prejudices within one ward whilst saying the exact opposite in another , etc.

Who are the Justice Party? I'm always impressed when a new outfit manages to get fewer votes than the number of signatures it needed to get on the ballot. Not much comes up on Google for them. Is it a Sussex thing?

Also, what's up with all the by-elections in Gwynedd? That's three since May by my count. I could understand it if it was just Llais Gwynedd collapsing under the weight of its own insanity, but that's a gain they made.
