Council by-elections

There were four council by-elections last night:

Rutherglen South Ward, South Lanarkshire UA. Lab gain from SNP. First preferences: Lab 1352 (39.9%, -4), LD 999 (29.5%, +4.7), SNP 712 (21%, -2.9), Con 128 (3.8%, -1.1), UKIP 111 (3.3%, +3.3), Green 59 (1.7%, +1.7), Ind 31 (0.9%, +0.9). Swing of 4.4% from Lab to LD since 2012. This result gives Labour majority control of S Lanarks Council for the first time since 2007.

Perton East Ward, South Staffordshire DC. Ind gain from Con. Ind 314 (65.1%, +16.9), Con 168 (34.9%, -16.9). Swing of 16.9% from Con to Ind since 2011.

Dawley Magna Ward, Telford & Wrekin UA. Lab hold. Lab 957 (53.9%, +11.4), Con 379 (21.4%, -8.1), UKIP 312 (17.6%, +17.6), Ind 126 (7.1%, +7.1). Swing of 9.8% from Con to Lab since 2011.

Gainsborough East Ward, West Lindsey DC. LD hold. LD 169 (28.6%, -15.7), Lab 149 (25.3%, -6.3), UKIP 143 (24.2%, +24.2), Con 129 (21.9%, -2.2). Swing of 4.7% from LD to Lab since 2011. Unusual instance of UKIP intervention hurting the LDs more than the Tories.

The Gainsborough result is interesting, if only because Labour only put up one candidate in a 3 member ward in 2011. They were successful (in third place), along with 2 of the 3 LibDems!
Must make it difficult to calculate a swing!
