There were four council by-elections yesterday. An emphatic victory in
Lambeth for my contemporary at Bristol Uni Labour Club, Co-Op Party stalwart
Martin Tiedemann, and then rather poor results elsewhere including a Tory gain
in Wirral, their first in a Met council by-election since 2008. An interesting
footnote is the derisory scores for TUSC, the latest incarnation of Militant, in
Merseyside and Brixton where they might have expected some traction.
Hill Ward, Fenland DC. Con hold. Con 319 (59.7%, +1.3), Lab 110 (20.6%,
-6.2), Ind 105 (19.7%, +19.7). Swing of 3.8% from Lab to Con since 2011.
Brixton Hill Ward, LB Lambeth. Lab hold. Lab 1593 (62.6%, +21.9), Green
344 (13.5%, -2.6), LD 274 (10.8%, -19.7), Con 164 (6.4%, -6.3), TUSC 72 (2.8%,
+2.8), UKIP 63 (2.5%, +2.5), SPGB 34 (1.3%, +1.3). Swing of 12.3% from Green to
Lab since 2010.
Heswall Ward, Wirral MBC. Con hold. Con 1254 (58.8%, -3.9), UKIP 460
(21.6%, +12.2), Lab 289 (13.6%, -4.2), Green 110 (5.2%, -0.8), TUSC 19 (0.9%,
+0.9). Swing of 8.1% from Con to UKIP since 2012.
